On two legs: Without support

Consider MABEL - very skilled runner among robots.
The famous robot ASIMO anthropoid (" Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility ") back in 2004 demonstrated the ability to move freely enough on two feet at a speed of 6 km / h.However, the manner of his movement closer to a rapid step, rather than to run. In fact, a biped robot that can run to date with the simultaneous separation of both limbs of the support, it was not so easy. And now our hero, able to run Mabel , in contrast to ASIMO, nothing but run, do not know how. Even running for him to rely on fear of support, but still it is running, with a rumbling iron parts - and at speeds up to 10.9 km / h.
Work on the MABEL began in 2008 at first the robot could only walk on a flat surface, and only then began to develop an uneven ground. Month after month, the developers improved algorithms for the feedback, allowing MABEL hold the balance, "real time" response to changes in the environment. Only this summer, the robot has learned to fully run.
The building itself MABEL adapted for running, his weight is distributed just like in people with severe torso and lighter, flexible limbs, equipped with springs, which act as tendons. This provides him an opportunity to stay in flight, with a separation of the two extremities of the earth, about 40% of time spent on each step. As for this race - and not like other robots, in which, according to the creators MABEL, this figure does not exceed 10%.
